I haven't made my way West for gold yet, but I hear there is a pretty interesting Franz Kline exhibit at the Paul Thiebaud Gallery in San Francisco right now. Supposedly Kline used to do hundreds of sketches for his oil paintings on the pages of telephone books, which he would often give away to friends or simply toss in the garbage. The tale behind these drawings is that Kline gave Paul Thiebaud's father, Wayne Thiebaud, several of these works and told him never to sell them...but he never told him not to let his son Paul sell them!
Yeah, good old Franz just did a cartwheel in his grave.
